all new filament holder design

Post by Legion 2.3 » Sun Jun 22, 2014 8:15 pm

Hello folks

I was unhappy with the original spool holder that can be downloaded here from Felix, i had some problems especially with taller prints, the cables of the heated bed collided with the spool which slowed it down which is a possible reason for the extruder to stop feeding.
Another problem is the inability to use 2 spools independend because the upper spool always turns when the lower one is turning.

So I decided to design something on my own, this is the result:

additional parts 1
This spool holder just needs a single bearing (the one that´s used for the Felix-designed holder) and theoretically not a single screw, nevertheless i used one just to be sure. The holder can be easily snapped on the item - profiles and fits pretty good even without a screw.

The bearing had to be glued in, otherwise, it was a bit too unstable.

The holder is pretty strong, i think 2 kg-spools wouldn´t be a problem.

It´s designed to hold spools up to a diameter of 220 mm and a weidth of 100 mm. The minimum core diameter is 49 mm, i use small adapter to hold 52 mm spools nicely in place. For smaller spools, the middle peace with the bearing can be replaced with a simple (printed) rod. Due to it´s modular design, the middle peace can be replaced with a smaller version of itself, too.

This isn´t the simplest spool holder for sure, and you need some filament to print it, but you need almost no additional parts, and it´s the first mod i´ve designed for a printer.

Currently, I have a bit trouble with rings of filament jumping of the spool, but a simple filament guide that can be snapped on the frame of the holder should fix this.

What do you think?

If anybody is interested, i can upload the stl on thingiverse.

These are the most importan parts.

There is a space of about 0,3-0,4 mm between the Frame and the bearing parts so that they slide out easily. (so the hole in the frame is 0,8 mm larger than the bearing part)
I sliced it with simplify3d, which typically prints inside dimensions about 0,4 mm smaller than in CAD.

I try to upload the adapters later, they seem to be to large to upload.

Edit: Files are some posts later down here

Do you have any photos with two spools mounted?

Your STL files are quite big, probably due to a rather high model resolution. So you could start by replacing the uploaded STLs by versions which have a lower resolution. Are we allowed to upload zipped files? If so, zip them.

Thanks for the advice.

Here is the spool holder zipped. The forum´s attachment quote is quite low ...

Thanks, very nice design.

I only have two comments.
- You can not use large spools of 2.3 kg - having a great width (12.5 cm)
- Spool 1 kg with a small hole (3.1 cm) can be used only with the tube itself. see photo.

- My fault I broke away brackets at the end of work "Rohr 1" and so it was no longer used part of the "Rohr Gegenstück-1". I drew a new part to eliminate the need to print again significantly larger part of the "Rohr 1"
