Fantastic. My E3D is on it's way. Look forward to testing this.

Many thanks!

My E3D hotend has arrived and I have started to print this out. For the base I am having trouble getting Slic3r or SFACT to produce appropriate support. What did you use to slice it?

Could you change the model so that the for the fins that hold the E3D in place have an angled bottom? So instead of them simply jutting out, it angles up on the bottom edge.

Thanks.

Hello,

yes, after print base are fins have an angled bottom, but despite this it is necessary to heat the cooler to go in the first attempt to insert. :-)

For print and slice Im use "Repetier Host FELIXPrinters".

I now have it all assembled and working well. It took a long time to file out the grooves that hold the E3D in place, but the Dremel did a great job of it in the end. Luckily I have a wheel for it that is a little smaller than the actual fins.

I have also replaced the extruder arm spring washers with a spring from an Ikea clothes peg. This seems to work well and give the arm more movement and still provide great tension.

A couple of things that I have noticed with the E3D V5:
1) The end of the brass nozzle has the 0.35mm hole but it also has a small amount of flat area around it. This smooths the filament down and provides a better finish.
2) The E3D oozes a lot less than the felix extruder.

As the hot end needs to be cooled for a while after the print has finished I adjusted my end code (and kill code) to keep the fan running for 5 minutes.

Code: Select all

G91
G1 E-100 F1000 ; retract extruder
G1 Z10 F100 ; Drop Bed 10mm
G90
G28 X0 ; home x
G28 Y0 ; home y
M104 S0 ; turn off hot end
M140 S0 ; turn off bed
M84 ; Stop all Steppers
M106 S255 ; turn on cooling fan
G4 P300000 ;wait 5 minutes to cool down the extruder before turning it off
M107 ; Turn off cooling fan
M81 ; Turn off
Note: I am using the latest repetier firmware.

After a lot of use and MANY problems with printing PLA using version 2 I have moved back to the original Felix extruder.

The version 2 extruder mount does NOT have enough cooling efficiency and the PLA gets stuck after a while. This is definitely caused by insufficient cooling.

I tried enlarging the exhaust holes as well as reversing the fan but it was still not enough. I also tried every other trick like oiling and modifying the internals of the tip.

I started building a new holder for the E3D v5 I have but the standard Felix extruder works perfectly well with all the materials I have so I haven't bothered to continue with it.

An "all metal" design is really no good for normal printing. It is really only necessary for temperatures above 250 degrees. I don't print any higher than that so it's not worth the bother.

I recommend you simply stick with the Felix hot end.

Printed over 10kg of "cheap" pla last month from reprapworld, everyone finds it cheap but it works PERFECT. (and just 18 euro a kilo)

60 rings printed with the e3d hot end with no problems and jams at al.

205 Deg Temp , first layer at 100% speed and the rest on 250%

So dont say that its not good for normal printing.

I have used the V5, and never had a jam anymore. But, in my experience I needed to heat the hot end a lot hotter. This might be the cause of a wrong thermister setting.(so the real temperature is the same).
Now I'm testing the E3D V6, same performance till now.
I've released the designs in my signature (For V5 and V6). But make sure the hot-end is bowden tube compatible.

No. see previous message. Nothing wrong with the E3D.

I've read your message. I'm just stating that it might be a too low hot end temperature which also results in jamming. This could be the issue if you used the supplied thermistor with the E3D hot end.
Why is an "all metal" design no good for normal printing?
