Alu beams

Post by killejano » Sun Jul 06, 2014 1:55 pm

Anyone know what type is the alu beam used for the frame of a felix? I'm thinking of trying a wildly different idea for dual head printing, but for that I would need a longer frame.

Hi, I think it's Series 8 (8mm wide slot) Aluminium Profile 40x40 and 40x80 for the framing.

Hope this helps.

Hi killejano,
the Alu beams are from a German firm called "Item"
www.item24.com
I have purchased several beams and bits to modify / re-design my printer here in Australia (print table substructure).
The only problem is that the Item parts are pretty expensive.
Good luck with your mods.

Thanks! By far the easiest to have the same beam to work with

Wondering how you confirmed the origin of aluminium extrusion as Item?

Looking at the Item catalog and felix photos, the beams look similar but not identical in structure. Item profile 8 40x40 E catalog is the closest and shows wide central elements around the central circle. Felix photos shows very thin support there.

There are numerous other manufacturers of very similar aluminium structural framing. I understand Item was the first in 1980. Presumably copies mushrooming after patent expiry. Still looking to see which is identical to Felix....

Bosch Rexroth
Misumi (Japan)
Parker IPS Structural Aluminium (USA)

Have seen many other smaller companies around the world.

Hi bluey,
I have no confirmation that Felix actually gets it's profiles from item.
I just found that all hardware parts to assemble the profiles (frame connectors, T-slot nuts etc.) are identical. The Item profiles I bought for my mods also look identical to my Felix 3 profiles (have not measured them with a micrometer dough... haha).
Also... I would think that Felix NL, located just across the border from Germany where Item has its factory and head office, would get the profiles from them.
But If you need to be 100% sure, you can always ask Guillaume from Felix to confirm.
good luck GGY
